Osteoporosis Imprimer
We recently updated you with the information that no increase had been observed in the risk of oesophageal cancer and gastric cancer in patients who were exposed to biphosphonates compared to controls Cardwell et al JAMA. 2010;304(6):657-663. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1098.
This is in contrast to what Green et al observed (Green et al BMJ Published 2 September 2010) using the same database but for a longer period (4.5 years vs 7.7 years) Green et al found that one (or more) prescription for oral bisphosphonates increased the risk of oesophageal cancer by 30%; 10 or more prescriptions nearly doubled the risk. No increased risk was found for cancers of the stomach or colorectum. Still the absolute numbers would remain small. Of course, these contradictory data warrant that physicians stress evenmore the importance of taking the drug with the necessary precautions and stop taking it if side effects occur.
